Monday, October 3, 2011 – Monday, November 28, 2011

Eight Classes at Loker School, 7 to 8:30 pm

A community education class for users of the Excel Spreadsheet program
is being offered through Wayland School Community Programs this fall.
Taught by Alan Reiss, a former teacher and current Chief Electrical
Engineer, VBA for Excel began Monday, October 3, 2011,  and
continues through Monday,  November 28th.  The series of eight classes
will be held at Loker School from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Each class will be
90 minutes in duration. There is no class on Columbus Day.

Topics covered will include the advantages of Visual Basic for
Applications (VBA), a procedural problem-solving and graphical
interface design software platform, which exists behind all Microsoft
Office applications - including Excel.  Topics include how to record
and execute macros, the VBA development environment, debugging tools,
writing VBA code, looping through code, graphical interface design and
additional subjects.

VBA for Excel participants will gain expertise that will enhance their
professional careers.  Mr. Reiss says the course will "provide Excel
users with marketable skills. This level of proficiency will set the
class participants above the ordinary Excel user. They will gain a new
layer of knowledge and skill plus a new arsenal of problem-solving
tools. The Excel/VBA expert is a rare find for employers everywhere."

Reiss’s background includes degrees in Physics and Electrical
Engineering.  A former educator at both the secondary and college
level, he is currently a Chief Electrical Engineer within the field of
automatic, high volume production testing of semiconductor devices. He
has been in that industry for the past 21 years.

For additional details about the contents of the class and who would
benefit from taking it, contact Mr. Reiss at AlanJReiss@Verizon.net.

The fee for the eight-class series is $250. For further information about enrollment, contact WSCP Director Brian
Jones at 508-655-6404.

How do you get to the next level and really develop your musicianship and achieve a greater sense of enjoyment and accomplishment in what you are doing musically?  How do you support your novice, young musician or challenge your seasoned veteran high school player/singer?  The Music Department of the Wayland Public Schools recommends private music lessons to reach these goals for all ensemble members.  Lessons are available under the umbrella of  the Wayland School Community Programs. The WSCP lesson teachers are highly experienced, seasoned performers and educators.  The program will be under the Program Coordination of Ms. Bernadette Vanaria.  The lesson content is consistent with the musical standards, goals and objectives of the Wayland Public Schools.

One-on-one weekly instruction is one of the best ways to improve on the specific performance skills for your instrument or voice.  Every WPS musician participating in the school instrumental and choral program is strongly encouraged to take private lessons, in addition to their ensemble participation. After school private music lessons are an important element in the musical growth of every student.  The support for the budding musician is invaluable, as is the challenge for the advanced player in need of more demanding repertoire and technique.

Private lessons will be available at Claypit Hill, Loker, Wayland Middle and Wayland High School.  Weekly lessons will be given in the early afternoon and evening, Monday through Friday.  Each semester will consist of 15 weekly lessons the week of October 3-February 3 and February 13-June 8.  The weekly lesson date and time will be scheduled with the instructor and Program Coordinator.

Instruction is available for woodwinds, brass, strings, and voice in 30, 45 or 60-minute weekly increments depending on a student’s level and interest.  There is an annual registration fee of $50 payable in September for the academic year.  The pricing compares favorably to our neighboring public school districts.

Tuition Rates per semester for 2011-2012

Please include the first semester tuition payment with the attached Registration Form.  The second semester installment is due by February 3, 2012 and you will be sent a reminder notice.  Checks are made payable to Wayland School Community Programs and will not be processed until lessons are formally scheduled.

And the Band Plays On….

by Connie Burgess

Only five weeks into her stint as a fledgling member of the Sudbury Valley New Horizons Band, 71-year-old Samantha White, formerly of Wayland, is fulfilling a lifelong dream.

“I was raised playing the piano,” she recalled last week as she prepared to take the stage for the band’s Winter Concert. “But,” she stresses, “I always wanted to be in a band.”  White is now playing the marimba in the band and the December 5th event was her first concert ever.

“I know I’ll make mistakes but they won’t hear me – there are 67 of us in this band – and if they do hear me, they’ll forgive me. We have fun here,” she said as she looked out at the rapidly filling Wayland Middle School auditorium.

White is joined by her husband, Dave Morin, 74, a professional drummer, who’s always longed to learn the vibraphone. “That’s why he joined but they have him playing the drums in this concert. He negotiated so he gets to play the vibes for the next concert,” said White.

As neophytes to their instruments, White and Morin are not atypical members of the band. Its concert program reflects the range of players’ abilities with performances by a Novice Band, Jazz Ensemble, Intermediate Band, and finally a combined band with all members on stage for a lively rendition of Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America,” complete with an audience sing-a-long.

Coming from many walks of life and representing a range of ages, the members are retirees, teachers, principals, medical professionals, business people, realtors, college professors, and artists.

Some have never played an instrument before. Others had put aside their instruments for decades as they focused on careers and raising families. But all share a love of music and are enjoying learning under the direction of band founder Diane Muffitt, who is also the Wayland Middle School band director.  And, although the band’s motto is “Your best is good enough,” many add private lessons to their schedules to strengthen their playing ability.

Pat Hughes of Wayland is a good example. She joined the band two years ago and has been taking private flute lessons. “I had never played before,” she says. “It’s been so much fun.” A physician assistant and mother of four grown children, Hughes practices every night after work. “I really believe this helps me think better,” says Hughes. “I find it fun to come home after work and practice for an hour every night.”

Joining Hughes on flute is Pat Ng, a Wayland mother of two and a business analyst. Unlike Hughes, she had experience as a player. “I started playing the flute in elementary school and continued through high school, but hadn’t picked it up in 20 years,” she said. Coming back to her instrument has been great and a lot of fun, she says.

“You forget how much fun it is to listen to all the instruments together. Some members have played before and some haven’t. It’s very varied, but the intermediates cheer on the beginners and appreciate what we are doing.”

The Winter Concert drew more than 200 people, who were treated to pieces ranging from Symphony No. 7 by Ludwig van Beethoven, the Peter Gunne Theme by Henry Mancini, Highlights from Les Miserables by Claude-Michel Schonberg, a Scott Joplin retrospective and the finale, “God Bless America” played by the Combined Bands.

Muffitt issued a blanket invitation to the crowd to consider joining. “Anyone can do it," she stressed. Reflecting on the event a few days later, she said, “I was very pleased with the concert, and most of all, I was pleased that everyone had fun making music together!  That is what really counts!!”

The band has just over 70 members, making it one of the larger New Horizons bands in the area. It is part of an international music movement to encourage musicians of all ages and abilities. The Wayland-based band is hosted by Wayland School Community Programs, part of the Wayland Public Schools. Members come from throughout the region.

Rehearsals are Wednesdays from 6:30 pm to 8:15 pm at Wayland Middle School and will start up again in January.  New members are welcome at any time.  Beginners are welcome, too, but should check with Muffitt to see if a beginner program is being offered; usually beginners only start in the fall, but sometimes it is possible to start at other times.

Contact Muffitt at 978-261-5065 or muffitt@bandnotes.info or go to the website, www.svnhb.org, for more information.

The above article appeared in the Wayland Town Crier.

Introducing the Band...

Wayland Middle School Band Director Diane Muffitt has joined a growing national movement and formed a New Horizons Band.  Now in cities all over the country, the bands give aspiring musicians a chance to learn an instrument for the first time and help out-of-practice musicians renew their long dormant talents.

Muffitt’s band has been created under the auspices of The New Horizons International Music Association, which was founded by Roy Ernst, Ph.D, a professor emeritus at The Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester in New York. Started in 1991, the Movement now boasts more than 50 bands in the United States, Canada and even Ireland, with many members being senior citizens, including one who took up the clarinet for the first time at the age of 89.

Muffitt’s endeavor is offered to area residents as part of Wayland School Community Program’s Community Education Department. It is open to residents of nearby towns, and while many New Horizons Bands are geared for people over 50, Muffitt’s only age stipulation is that the person be an adult.

According to the New Horizons organization, many members are people who put aside their musical interests while they were busy pursuing a career and/or raising a family. With more free time in their later years, many are thriving musically, cognitively, and socially through their New Horizons experience.

Muffitt says the closest New Horizons Band is one in Portsmouth, NH, and that the group has been around for four years and already has six different performance groups and over 60 people involved.  They recently performed at the AARP convention held in Boston this year.

Muffitt has embraced the challenge of creating a new band with great excitement.  “This is music education for all ages,” she explains, noting she’s been directing adults since she started directing the Freedom Trail Band in the early 1980s.

“So many people say to me, ‘I used to play,’ or ‘I’ve always wanted to do that,’ or ‘My son or daughter doesn’t want to play anymore. I just wish I could play.’

Now I can offer these adults a way to get involved. As a teacher, I can touch all these people, and it is especially meaningful to be with the elder generation as they experience the joy of playing music with other people, some of whom are younger adults and some who are their own age.”

New Horizons band members need no experience, only the desire to play, explains the 32-year music teacher. “It’s not about aptitude. We teach adult beginners the same way we teach the kids: one note at a time. All you need is a love of music. Everybody can do it. It has to do with practice and desire.”

Performers meet one night a week at the Wayland Middle School, and are taught by Muffitt and a talented staff of musicians.

For further information, e-mail Muffitt at muffitt@bandnotes.info or call her at 978-261-5065.
