Ask Jeeves for Kids

For Middle School kids and younger, the best search site. The search engine accepts questions in regular English. I asked - what causes the seasons? - the page returned gave a very good and easy to understand answer, as well as diagrams. The sites indexed by Ask Jeeves are selected by content editors and are all "G-rated" and written specifically for children. There is also a section on the page which returns results from other search engines. Those results have not been reviewed, but have been filtered for content by SurfWatch.

This is Yahoo's answer to a search engine and index for kids. They check every site for objectionable content. Designed for surfers 7 to 12 years of age.

This is a database of education related sites. Students may select the appropriate level: elementary, middle or high school.

Web search site for kids by librarians. Their key concern was to create a guide for "their young users to valuable and age appropriate web sites."

The Awesome Library organizes exploration of the World Wide Web with 12,000 carefully reviewed sites. The site is sponsored by the Evaluation and Development Institute of Oregon.

This site is also a refereed site. It is mainly an index, but also has search capabilities.
