Searching the Web

When browsing the Web, the user starts at their home page, or, perhaps, a well-known index site or catalog like Yahoo and navigates through the Web by selecting links and following those links. This is an interesting way to explore and introduce yourself to the World Wide Web. When a user is looking for pages on a particular topic, however, it is helpful to use an Internet search engine. Using a search engine you enter a keyword (or words) and the engine will conduct a search of the indexed database compiled at that site and return you a list of pages that contain your keyword(s). The Internet search engines are constantly growing and changing. No site is comprehensive. That is, there is no catalog or search site that has indexed the entire Web. For that reason, we recommend that you try out different search engines and become more familiar with your favorites. This will raise your chances of retrieving the information you are looking for. The sites we have listed below are a few of the services we recommend and represent a good starting point. For a more comprehensive list of search sites, see the Yahoo pages, Searching the Web.
